El viernes pasado el 20/9  un grupo de estudiantes viajaron a la Universidad de Iowa, al Colegio de Educación por un día para conocer más sobre los problemas en el mundo y desarrollar soluciones para las barreras de idiomas. El propósito de la conferencia fue para inspirar a los estudiantes en su trabajo para obtener el sello de bialfabetismo. Los estudiantes tuvieron la oportunidad de comunicarse con muchas personas de diferentes orígenes e identidades. La conferencia Will Behrends de la Universidad de Iowa (Baker Teacher Leader Center) y la oradora principal era la Dr. Whitehead de Washington D.C. Estudiantes de West High, City High, y Liberty High estaban en la conferencia. Los estudiantes hablaron sobre la importancia de idiomas y culturas diferentes. 

La conferencia tuvo un enfoque principal para ayudar a los estudiantes entender su parte en el mundo y tener compasión para otras personas en este país y en el mundo actual. También incluyó oportunidades para hablar sobre los desafíos globales y soluciones para resolver algunos desafíos. 

Después de la presentación por Dr. Whitehead los estudiantes participaron en discusiones de grupos. Las actividades del evento incluyó un partido de bingo acerca de las experiencias de los estudiantes con  personas de culturas diferentes. La otra actividad era acerca de conexiones con culturas y conversaciones sobre desafíos globales. La segunda parte de la conferencia se centró en las presentaciones de organizaciones de la comunidad. Los estudiantes pudieron escuchar información de cada organización y el trabajo que hacen para las personas de la comunidad. Los estudiantes aprendieron más sobre cada organización en grupos pequeños  y escogieron a la que le gustaría ayudar como voluntarios. 

Representantes de cada grupo estaban en la conferencia. Los grupos presentes incluyen Iowa City Children’s Museum, United Action for Youth, Neighborhood Centers of Johnson County, North Liberty Community Pantry and Gardens, IC Compassion, Iowa City Parks and Recreation, Council for International Visitors (CIVIC), y Center for Workers Justice.

Todos las organizaciones tenían un mensaje similar. Ellos quieren ayudar a las personas en la comunidad, muchos que hablan un lenguaje diferente.

Center for Workers Justice ayuda a los trabajadores de otros países aprender el inglés,  y dan clases para los hijos de los trabajadores sobre materias como matemáticas e inglés. También tienen un lugar para cuidar a los hijos menores mientras que los padres estén en clase. El cinco de octubre, Center for Workers Justice van a tener una gala para recaudar fondos para su organización. 

United Action for Youth es un lugar hecho para adolescentes para que tengan un lugar donde se puedan sentir cómodos y seguros para expresar sus emociones y hablar sobre problemas que tienen. 

Iowa City Children’s Museum se trata de interactuar con los niños y ayudar a los papás entender lo que está pasando en sus vidas. 

Neighborhood Centers of Johnson County ofrecen programas antes y  después de la escuela para los niños de la comunidad, y ofrece una variedad de servicios para las familias con necesidades específicas. 

CIVIC es una organización que ayuda a personas que vienen de otros países y les enseñan sobre Iowa City. Una de las oportunidades que tienen los estudiantes es poder asistir a las juntas que tienen las con las visitas internacionales.

Iowa City Compassion ayuda a los inmigrantes a integrarse en la comunidad para que puedan tener la vida que buscan. También, ellos proveen múltiples recursos para las familias y tienen cenas culturales semanalmente para ayudar a las familia crear conexiones con personas en la comunidad. 

North Liberty Community Pantry and Gardens da comida y ropa para las personas en la comunidad que necesitan ayuda y están en necesidad de artículos básicos. 

“Nosotros creemos que el viernes pasado abrió nuestros ojos sobre la importancia de la habilidad de ser globalmente competente. Por ejemplo, nosotros conocimos a una persona quien se llama Benjamin. El aprendió Inglés el año pasado. Pudimos hablar sobre nuestras diferencias culturales. Nosotros somos amigos de él ahora,” Grace Crimmins y Courtney Olson, los estudiantes del último año. 

Otro estudiante dijo, “Yo aprendí mucho el viernes sobre mi comunidad. Espero ayudar a las personas desafortunadas en mi comunidad con trabajo voluntario.”

Esta conferencia es muy importante en las vidas de los estudiantes. Fue importante porque todos los participantes están pensando ahora sobre sus idiomas y como quieren usarlos. También todos las organizaciones son interesantes y los estudiantes quieren trabajar con muchas de ellas  porque todos tienen ideas buenas y les dan la oportunidad para ayudar a su comunidad y hacer cosas buenas. 

La conferencia tiene un impacto en los estudiantes en la clase del Sello de Bialfabetismo (Seal of Biliteracy) porque ahora saben más información sobre el sello de bialfabetismo y como obtenerlo. Tambien les enseño a los estudiantes la importancia de ser una persona informada. Es una oportunidad para colaborar con algunas organizaciones de la área. Enseña a los estudiantes que a veces es necesario poner otras personas antes de uno mismo. La conferencia es muy beneficioso para estudiantes quien quieren ayudar a otros, para hacer actividades voluntarios, y crear un mundo generoso.

This past Friday, 9/20, students traveled to the University of Iowa College of Education for a day to recognize world problems and to start to develop solutions for language barriers. The purpose of the conference was to inspire students in their work of obtaining the seal of biliteracy. Students had the opportunity to communicate with people of different origins and identities. The conference was led by Will Behrends from the University of Iowa (Baker Teacher Leader Center) and the guest speaker was Dr. Whitehead from Washington D.C. The students also talked about the importance of language and different cultures. 

The conference also focused on the point that students need to understand the role they play in the world and to have compassion for other people in the US and in the world. It also included opportunities to discuss global challenges and some possible solutions. 

After the presentation by Dr. Whitehead, the students participated in group discussions. The activities of the event included a game of bingo about the experiences of other people in different cultures. The other activity was about cultural connections and global challenges. The second part of the conference was centered on presentations from community organizations. The students were able to hear about each organization and the work they do for the community.  The students learned more about each organization in small groups and chose which one they would like to volunteer with. 

The groups at the conference included Iowa City Children’s Museum, United Action for Youth, Neighborhood Centers of Johnson County, North Liberty Community Pantry and Gardens, IC Compassion, Iowa City Parks and Recreation, Council for International Visitors (CIVIC), y Center for Workers Justice.

All of the organizations had a similar message: to help people in the community, many who speak a different language. 

The Center for Workers Justice helps workers learn English and gives classes in different subjects for the kids. They also have a place to care for young children while their parents are in class. On October 5th, they are going to have a gala to raise money.

United Action for Youth (UAY) is a place for teenagers where they can feel comfortable and accepted to express themselves and discuss issues they are facing. 

The Iowa City Children’s Museum tries to interact with kids and help parents understand what is going on in their children’s lives. 

The Neighborhood Centers of Johnson County offer programs before and after school for kids and is focused on providing a variety of services to families with specific needs. 

CIVIC is an organization that helps people who live in other countries and come to visit Iowa City. One opportunity for students who volunteer with them is to help show around international representatives visiting and sit in on meetings with the visitors. 

Iowa City Compassion helps immigrants settle into their lives and achieve the life they were looking for when they came here. They also provide multiple resources for families and have cultural dinners to help the families build connections with community members. 

The North Liberty Community Pantry and Gardens gives food and clothing for those in the community who are in need of these things. 

“We think that this past Friday opened our eyes to the importance of the ability to be competent globally. For example, we met a person named Benjamin. He learned English this past year. We are friends now,” said Grace Crimmins and Courtney Olson, seniors. 

Another student said, “I learned a lot about my community. I hope to help unfortunate people in my community with volunteer work.”

This conference was important because all of the participants are thinking now about their language and how they want to use it. All the organizations were interesting causing many students to want to work with them and use their ideas on how to help and reach out to more people. It is also an opportunity for kids to help others and do good things. 

The conference has an impact on the students in the Seal of Biliteracy class because now they now have more information about the seal and how to obtain it. It also taught students the importance of being an informed person.  It is an opportunity to collaborate with some organizations in the area. It highlighted for the students that sometimes it is necessary to put others before themselves. The conference is beneficial for students who want to help others, volunteer, and create a generous world.
