The Liberty Prom Committee begins preparation for each year’s prom in September, by splitting into different groups to cover every aspect of prom preparation. The group of roughly twenty Liberty parents meet often to plan the details of the event. Then, as the event approaches, they book entertainment, reserve catering for after-prom, purchase and set up decorations, fundraise, plan the grand entrance and purchase prizes for after-prom.
The dance itself is sponsored by the school, but the committee plans the logistics of the event and funds parts of prom and all of after-prom. Because of this, they rely heavily on fundraising to have a successful event. Each year since the committee’s formation, they’ve taken student feedback to continuously improve students’ experience at prom. That feedback, along with fundraising, has led to prom becoming increasingly more exciting and enjoyable for students over the years.
This year’s fundraisers included the Dueling Pianos event, selling Scratch Cupcakes, selling Peppercorn pizzas, Super Bowl squares and the Canes fundraiser. Students can still support prom by renting their suit from Skeffington’s, and if they return it by Skeffington’s next open day, then the prom committee receives a percentage of the money back. They can also support by participating in Hyvee’s Petals for Prom event, which donates to the prom committee for every corsage/boutonniere purchased.
While some aspects of prom stay consistent, the committee makes changes each year based on student feedback.
“Each year, we try to do things differently, especially at after prom,” said Andrea Meyer, Prom Committee Co-Chair.
This year’s prom will take place at the Iowa Memorial Union with the theme ‘Moonlight Glam.’ Because of the new location, there will be a grand entrance with a professional photographer instead of the usual grand march.
“So if you want your picture taken, like a nice photo taken with your group or your date, then those will all be free and included in your package as well,” said Amy Johnson, Prom Committee Co-Chair.
The after-prom will feature new entertainment, games, prizes and food. Tickets this year will still be $25 and will get students into both prom and after-prom.
“I just want people to understand, you know, one ticket gets them into prom and after prom… once you’re in with that one ticket, everything is free,” said Meyer.
The committee also posts all information, including answers to common questions on their Facebook.
